The beta release of P4D, Perforce Server 2013.2 contains significant new
replication capabilities for improved user experience at remote sites,
namely edge and commit server configuration.

A commit server handles all file content and global metadata.
Edge servers reduce WAN traffic and provide better performance
all around. An edge server is similar to a forwarding replica,
but also handles workspace metadata and can process a significant
chunk of work locally (syncing files, opening files for edit,
starting a merge, etc.) with no communication back to the commit
server required.

Notes
Please note the updated generation 3 merge engine enabling file rename support
now becomes the default in the 2013.2 release. Deploying commit and edge servers
requires advanced planning and familiarity with Perforce replication technology.

Contact Perforce Support for help planning a commit/edge server deployment.
