Greetings, folks!

We invite you to our overnight hackathon on the USS Hornet, the aircraft-carrier-turned-museum, on the bay in Alameda, California (http://www.uss-hornet.org/). We're going to be hacking on Swarm, our web-based, totally moddable tool for coder teams.

The basic deal is that it's an overnight event (5:00 p.m. Friday Sept. 20 - 5:00 p.m. Saturday September 21), free of charge, and includes food, swag, drinks, entertainment, prizes, and whatever else it takes to keep you hacking through the night and into the day. There’s even real sailors’ quarters for naps (not that you'll get tired or anything :-) ).

We'll be taking a break around midnight or so for a special treat and a Geek Toy Expo--so bring your geek toys.

MORE INFO:

Our aim is to make Swarm the Coder’s Dream Friend: all Swarm users are coders, and every user can improve the Swarm experience bit by bit, or by leaps and bounds. I make a Swarm mod, you make a Swarm mod, we all make a Swarm mod. We all trade our Swarm mods around, and we improve one another’s mods. Together, we keep making Swarm into the Coder’s Dream Friend.

Swarm’s built on what we like to call the LAPP stack (that’s like the LAMP stack, but with Perforce instead of MySQL). Swarm is loaded with open source bits, and you get all the source. So if you can write a little PHP, Javascript, or whatever, you can pretty much make Swarm be and do anything you want.

Don’t like how Swarm looks, feels, or acts? Change it! Plop in your own PHP mod, and now Swarm is as you wish it to be. Integrate your Twitter feed into Swarm? Go. Do it. You have the power.

Any knowledge of stuff like CSS, jQuery, RESTful interfaces, and Zend Framework 2 might also come in handy.

Swarm is all about collaborative coding, so there's really not a competition at the hackathon. You can hack solo or as part of a team (if you need teammates, we'll set you up). As long as your mod is demo-able by noon on September 21, you can demo it. If you demo your mod, you (or your team) will get to choose one of our really good prizes.

If you want to submit a mod before the hackathon, you can, at http://swarm.public.perforce.com
