Preparing to upgrade P4D from 2003.2 to 2015.1 running on Windows Server 2003 (server upgrade also planned).
I follow the procedure in KB2467 (Upgrading a Perforce Server) and KB5469 (Upgrading to 2013.3 and beyond).
I create a checkpoint on the production server (p4d.exe -jc).
The checkpoint file is 253MB uncompressed and contains @pv@ records only.
I replay the checkpoint file into an empty folder (p4d.exe -r T:\upgrade -jr T:\upgrade\checkpoint)
but the replay fails with an error (the line number changes each time).

Perforce server error:
Journal file 'T:\upgrade\checkpoint' replay failed at line 1445997!
End of input in middle of word!
Perforce db files in 'T:\upgrade' will be created if missing...
Recovering from T:\upgrade\checkpoint...

Presumably P4D runs out of memory or something. If I split the checkpoint file into multiple files as per KB2426
(Reading Journal and Checkpoint Files) and replay each one in order it all works a treat.

In summary, my options are:
1) split the checkpoint file, or
2) perform multiple upgrades using different server versions, or
3) something else?

Thanks.

P.S. the server version is correct. The software is 12 years old.

I think I have identified the root cause of the problem.

P4D version 2003.2 writes 0x1A (aka CTRL-Z or DOS EOF marker) as the last byte of the checkpoint file. If I remove this byte then I can successfully replay the checkpoint file using P4D version 2015.1 without first splitting it into smaller files.
