I chose Perforce in about 1998 for the company where I worked from 1993 to 2010. At the time, we were an all-UNIX shop and there was no GUI for UNIX, only Windows. The Perforce people were working on a Java app, but when they announced that they canceled the Java project, I began work on "TkP4" (a Tcl/Tk clone of P4Win: http://timshel.ca/tkp4/ ) the next day . I even gave a talk on TkP4 at the 2000 Perforce User Conference in 2000 in San Francisco. P4V eventually came along, and after a few releases I switched from TkP4 to P4V and haven't looked back.
